Minecraft Prohibits NFT Integration On Game Servers

Minecraft has announced that it plans to block the use of its in-game assets including mods, skin packs, and personal items to develop digital collectibles.

Microsoft-owned video game, Minecraft, has published an update to its usage guidelines. In that update, it banned the integration of nonfungible tokens (NFT) on its servers.

Minecraft noted the platform is designed to guarantee that there is an inclusive experience for all players. To ensure that continuity is achieved, Minecraft wants to prevent the integration of blockchain technologies with all its servers. Notably, Minecraft expressed its fear about the reliability of third-party NFTs and the risk of artificially inflated prices.

In recent months, many firms started incorporating blockchain technology with Minecraft developing Minecraft collectible NFTs, supporting a play-to-earn (P2E) mode and Minecraft NFT rewards.

The team also wants to block the use of its in-game assets like mods, skin packs, and personal items to develop digital collectibles.

“We recognize that creation inside our game has intrinsic value, and we strive to provide a marketplace where those values can be recognized.”

Trail Of Reactions After Minecraft Ban

After the announcement, there have been various reactions from different quarters. While commenting on the news, Chris Dixon of Andreessen Horowitz said that it was a reminder of the unreliability of building projects on Web2 networks. He concluded:

“They change the rules on developers on a whim.”

On his part, ArkDev, NFT Worlds’ co-founder, said that the team was striving to adapt to the development. He added:

“We are working to figure out to what extent this will [affect] us. The team was building potential pivots to deal with the absolute worst case, so they keep going.”

NFT Worlds is the most affected by this announcement since its services mainly focus on third-party blockchain and NFT Minecraft integrations. This project’s native token, WRLD, nosedived by a staggering 65% after the announcement. The prices of the project’s NFTs also took a thorough beating, crashing by up to 70%.

Ban On NFT Is War Against Blockchain Games

Minecraft is now the latest traditional gaming platform that seems to be standing in the way of NFTs. Gaming Company, Valve, previously banned blockchain and NFT integration from its assets marketplace, Steam. Also, Epic Games said that it would stay away from NFT integrations with its titles.

In the meantime, some believe that the ban will eventually spur the adoption of NFTs even further. Whatever the outcome, Minecraft wants to also update its guidelines and communicate with its entire community.
